Why Do We Need a Saviour?

By Peter C. Cay-ohen

  1. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

  1. John 4:41, 42 – Jesus is the Christ, the Saviour of the world

  1. 1 John 4:14 – God send Jesus to be the Saviour of the world

  1. 1 Timothy 4:10 – Christ, the Saviour of the World is here called the living God

  1. Why do we need a Saviour?

  1. We need Jesus as our Saviour because we all have sinned.

  1. Romans 3:23 – All have sinned and come short of the glory of God

  1. Romans 5:12 – by one man sin entered the world and by sin comes death; and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned.

  1. Romans 18, 19 – All men were counted as sinners and are condemned to die because of the offence of one man, obviously referring to Adam in the garden of Eden.

  1. Romans 3:9 – 12 – Moreover, we all have committed personal sins. None of us is righteous.

Note: So we are sinners on two counts: first, because of the disobedience of Adam, and second, because of our personal disobedience.

  1. 1 John 1:10 – If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar because his word said we all have sinned.

  1. Titus 1:2 – But since God cannot lie, it must be true that we all have sinned.

  1. 1 John 1:8 – If we insist that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.

  1. Since we all have sinned, we all deserve to die. Without Jesus to save us, we will surely suffer the punished of our sin and will suffer and die in the lake of fire.

  1. Romans 6:23 – the wages (punishment) of sin is death

  1. Ezekiel 18:4 – The soul that sin must die

  1. Revelation 20:14, 15 – the death penalty of sin will be implemented to man in the lake of fire where they will die the second time. Death in the lake of fire is called the second death.

Great Controversy, p. 544

“The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23. While life is the inheritance of the righteous, death is the portion of the wicked. Moses declared to Israel: “I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil.” Deuteronomy 30:15. The death referred to in these scriptures is not that pronounced upon Adam, for all mankind suffer the penalty of his transgression. It is “the second death” that is placed in contrast with everlasting life.”

  1. Hebrews 9:27 – Since the fall of man in Eden, it was appointed unto men to die once. This death is the first death, and all men were appointed to die this first death.

  1. Revelation 20:6 – But not all will suffer the second death. Those who will believe in Jesus and follow the will of God in their lives, though they will die the first death, but they will be resurrected at the first resurrection and the second death has no power over them because they will be with Jesus in heaven.

  1. Revelation 2:11 – Christ will help those who believe in Him as their Lord and savior to be overcomers in this present life and they will not be hurt by the second death.

  1. Revelation 21:8 – But without Jesus to save us from eternal death, we will all die in the lake of fire and suffer the second death. This is why we need Jesus.

III. Jesus is our only hope. He will save us all if we will believe in Him as our Lord and Saviour.

  1. John 3:16-18
  2. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  3. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
  4. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

  1. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

  1. John 12:46, 47
  2. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
  3. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

  1. Matthew 11:28, 29 – Jesus invites us saying
  2. Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
  3. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

  1. John 6:37-39 – Jesus assures us that if we go to Him He will not refuse us. He said:
  2. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
  3. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
  4. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
