Chapter 1: What Is God’s Remnant Church?

There are different ideas being promoted in Christendom as to who and what constitutes God’s remnant church in these last days. Even among Sabbath keeping Adventists, the term “remnant church” is understood and applied in many different ways. In this study we will take time to present what the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy teach as to what constitutes God’s remnant people at the present time.

We will study the subject of the remnant church based on what is revealed in the Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White which Adventists believe is the “testimony of Jesus” or “Spirit of Prophecy” given for the instruction and guidance of the remnant church in these last days. We urge all not to approach the subject with preconceived ideas or prejudices, but instead seeking for a more complete understanding with true openness of mind and humility of heart.

The word “remnant” is from the Greek word “loipoy” meaning “remaining ones.” Webster’s Dictionary defines remnant as “a remainder, a small fragment, a surviving trace, residue, yet last.” This concept of the remnant is taught in the following Bible and Spirit of Prophecy passages as follows:

“The spiritual restoration of which the work carried forward in Nehemiah’s day was a symbol, is outlined in the words of Isaiah: ‘They shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities.’ ‘They that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.’ Isaiah 61:4; 58:12.”

“The prophet here describes a people who, in a time of general departure from truth and righteousness, are seeking to restore the principles that are the foundation of the kingdom of God. They are repairers of a breach that has been made in God’s law–the wall that He has placed around His chosen ones for their protection, and obedience to whose precepts of justice, truth, and purity is to be their perpetual safeguard.

“In words of unmistakable meaning the prophet points out the specific work of this remnant people who build the wall. ‘If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honorable; and shalt honor Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.’  Isaiah 58:13, 14.

“In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God’s remnant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring reform and that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is to stand as a memorial of creation, a constant reminder of the power of God. In clear, distinct lines they are to present the necessity of obedience to all the precepts of the Decalogue. Constrained by the love of Christ, they are to cooperate with Him in building up the waste places. They are to be repairers of the breach, restorers of paths to dwell in. See verse 12.”  Prophets and Kings, pp. 677, 678.  (Emphasis throughout are supplied by the author unless otherwise indicated)

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.”  Isaiah 11:11.

“But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.”  1 kings 12:22-24

“Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.” I Kings 14:10.

“And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.  For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.” 2 Kings 19:30, 31.

“Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.”  Romans 9:27;

“God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.  Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.  But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.  Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.”  Romans 11:2-5.

“And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”  Revelation 12:17.

We understand that the biblical concept of the remnant deals with any group of people who, in a time of general apostasy due to trials and persecutions, or some form of calamity, maintain their loyalty and faithfulness to God, and by precept and example present the necessity of obedience to all the commandments of God that is the foundation of his kingdom.

The term remnant church does not only refer to the victorious people of God who, empowered by the latter rain, shall give the loud cry to the world at the time of the imposition of the mark of the beast.  The term remnant church could be applied to God’s organized church at any time. In fact, the church established by Christ in the first century was appropriately called the remnant church.”
